Negros has been noted as the country’s main sugar producer and aside from that, there is a number of mining corporations business that has been helping the province. It is true that the province is very rich in mineral deposits. Most of the minerals that are found in the province are copper with reserves reaching to about 591 million metric tons and gold ore with reserves reaching to about 25 millions tons. Silver and molybdenum deposits are also abundant including non-metallic minerals suitable for agriculture and industrial uses.

The towns in Himamaylan and Binabalgan are the perfect places for such mining activities. Company’s like the Philmet Exploration Corporation go full blast on their mining activities in the towns of La Libertad, Jimalalud, Tayasan, Ayungon, Manjuyod and Bais City. And since there are a lot of vegetation affected during such mining activity, there has been a lot of protest pushed by farmers and rebels hindering the mining explorations.

There are also Filipino and Chinese owned mining have doing mining exploration in Negros where a variety of metallic and non-metallic minerals were found which silica, phosphates, coal, copper, nickel, iron, malybdenum, including shale. There are also possibilities of huge gold deposits and silver. And according to statistics, foreign and local owned mining companies have applied to the local government to do mining activities to thousands of hectares of land in the Negros provinces.
